My personal favorite is "orz"

Took me a while to figure out that it wasn't supposed to be read phonetically. I recall asking a Japanese friend of mine "日記でよく出てくる言葉なんだけど、オルズってどういう意味?" (beware of my poor Japanese - it's possible that something is amiss there.) That lead to an interesting conversation about internet slang in Japanese/English :)

After spending a few months on mixi, I find I'm starting to understand Japanese net speak better. Though I'm not sure if that's a good thing =P

Well, what does it mean???? That one has been bugging me for a long time!!!!

EDIT: I'm guessing it's "a Japanese emoticon representing a kneeling or bowing person, with the "o" being the head, the "r" being the arms and part of the body, and the "z" being part of the body and the legs. This "stick" figure represents failure and despair."

It's not a very convincing emoticon...

yeah, both orz and OTL are supposed to be pictures of people, like you said. I kind of like them myself.

I first heard about orz from Coco here actually. I had no clue about this phenomenon until I saw Densha Otoko. I'd suggest that show if you want a quick education on this topic.

So, is orz, w, 笑, 汗, etc considered to be アスキーアート? Or is there another name for it in Japanese?

検索してみました。棒人間が正式名称?らしいです。
