Fun Photo

Thought some of the beginners might have fun with this. Didn't really know whether to put it under a language subforum or the cultural one.

Ha, I probly fall into the category of beginner, I can't see this in any other way than the humorous one.

I'd guess it's an abbreviation based on the school name or something?

Rich wins!

It is a sign in the window of a cram school bragging that 96 of their students were accepted to 太田女子高校....abbreviated locally as太女. I thought it was interesting because anyone not familiar with this practice (and the name of the town and school) would be prone to read it as "96 fat girls".

I only know 名 when it's in front of 前 (名前)
What does it mean by itself?

When after a number like that, it is a counter, similar to 人 (にん). Read 名 as めい in this case.

I read it as 96 dog women, which was still pretty funny to me. So I guess it works even for the real beginners.

I take it based off the stereotypes, and what I've read on gaijinsmash, these would be the girls that weigh about 120#

Yeah, I realized that when I looked up 太, which really doesn't mean what it looks like it should mean. I think that the 人と that came up with that kanji had a pretty 大 opinion of his... well, of himself :)

Do most kanji really look like they mean something?
