How do I find Kanji the a dictionary?

Postby pubju » Wed 11.14.2007 4:37 pm

Hay,

I'm jumping the gun a little bit here (we havnt started kanji in class yet), but I'm curious as to how you find kanji in the dictionary? I have a japanese newspaper article I would like to translate, but I don't know how to find the kanji in my dictionary

Can anyone tell me how? I did a search, but couldn't find any explanations for beginners

Well, it sort of depends on what kind of dictionary you're using. If it's a paper dictionary, either you'll look up by index radical and stroke count, or the skip method (which has a different method of splitting up the kanji into parts), as well as being able to look up by reading.

If you're using some sort of electronic dictionary, you may have multiple ways available to look up a kanji: multi-radical search (my favorite), skip, bushu, ... basically, you have to be able to count strokes, and be able to pick out radicals from a chart (or, in the case of skip method, split the kanji into two sections by some rules.)

Is it a kanji dictionary, or just a Japanese-English dictionary?

Which one? It should include instructions on how to look up kanji in it.
