How do you WRITE japanese dialects?

Postby Svensk » Mon 06.29.2009 5:21 pm

Hello!
I have a question; how do you write japanese dialects? If you use languages like german, swedish, or english, you can easily write dialects using the alphabet, but how do the japanese do it? Do they have to use hiragana/katakana instead of kanji, or do they use Furigana? If they use furigana, wont the younger readers, who no not understand alot of kanjis, be confused, and think that is how the kanjis are pronounced?
Life sucks, then you die.

Dialects aren't actually written that often; the written language is done mostly in standard Japanese. Typically what shows up as "dialect" in fictional works is a watered-down version of a dialect that can be represented fine with the normal orthography.

Scholarly linguistic articles would use roman letters (or IPA) to represent a Japanese dialect if necessary, but most Japanese dialects can be represented fine with the kana because it's rare for a dialect to include extra consonants or vowels not found in standard Japanese.

Also, as far as I know, dialects use various sentence-enders and conjugations of verbs, and not alternate readings for kanji.

Pretty much all dialects I've seen written can be expressed completely through the hiragana in between the kanji (okurigana).

There is one exception I can think of... One dialect changes the past-tense of XXあう verbs from XXあった to XXおった. Since verbs like 買う (かった→こった) and 貰う (もらった→もろった) include the changed hiragana in the kanji, you end up with unique readings that can only be expressed with furigana. However, any Japanese child who is reading something that uses these dialects will already be well aware of the correct conjugations, even if they (surprisingly) hadn't heard that dialect usage before.

Young readers might not know the correct readings of kanji, but they do know correct words, so there aren't many chances for them to remember a kanji as being read the wrong way.
