over the weekend I watched たそがれ清兵衛 (The twilight samurai -- btw a beautiful movie) and I heard this construction: 早く帰らなくてなりません。The context was that since Seibei, the protagonist of the story, had two daughters, no wife and a sick mother he had to go back home early (and not be able to go out drinking with colleagues).
I learned that to express 'to have to ...' the construction is 〜なければなりません so I'm wondering whether I simply heard it wrong (very likely) or 〜なくてなりません is a different grammatical construction I don't know of (this is also very likely  )

Thanks in advance

Xなくて(は)なりません is just another "we must do X" -- literally it's like "If we don't do X, it won't become [good?]"
