Meaning of ~~をまとい (found in songs)

Postby Roy Candler » Wed 09.09.2009 2:52 pm

Lines ending ~~をまとい occur in pop songs, but no amount of hunting in dictionaries has given me any clue as to what the meaning might be. Here's an example, from "One Night" sung by Hiroko Inoue. It includes a fair amount of English, much of which makes no sense . . .

I am waiting for you 探してる月夜の記憶
香る花は打ち寄せる波のほとり
and nothing but you 残された風をまとい
so I can see the sky

I wanna show you 叫んでる海ぬらす雨
飾られた夢はいつしか砂の中
and don't cry for you 色づいた瞬間をまとい
so I can see the sky

Any ideas as to what ~~をまとい might mean? Is it 文語, perhaps? I haven't encountered it anywhere except in songs.

Try looking up the verb 俟とう (まとう).

I know your Japanese is much better than any average Japanese people.
But I would like to try to object to your opinion, boldly. :)

纏う seems a bit more suitable kanji for the lyrics to me. (I'm not saying it's wrong)
I suspect you have already considered the possibility and excluded it, haven't you?
I think we both know that it's not a big deal though...

Sorry if I sounded rude.
I was just interested in you. Because I've never seen a person in my life who is that good with Japanese and able to give the Kanji "俟とう" to that line, even in native people, I mean. It's a PhD-level issue.

Sorry, that's a henkan miss. Don't know why it gave me 俟とう first -- I expected the other.

Don't worry. I'd be surprised, too. :)

I assume that you've already found out the meaning, though.
You're right. It's a sort of 文語.
But since it's very commonly used, I'd call it poetic or lyrical.

e.g.
ウェディングドレスを着た花嫁
ウェディングドレスを身にまとった花嫁
(bride in a wedding dress)

彼女はウェディングドレスを身にまとう
彼女はウェディングドレスを身にまとい、歩き出した。

Thanks to both of you for those kind replies. I've been having a bit of computer trouble, starting from just after posting the query, so haven't been able to look at TJP until now. It did cross my mind that 纏うmight be the answer, but I couldn't make sense of the -い ending, not having met it before. I can quite understand why it's in hiragana in the song lyric examples though, as the 22-stroke kanji just looks like a blob on my screen until I zoom in really close.

Anyway, does this mean that the phrase 残された風をまとい is to be understood as something like "wrapped in the leftover wind" (whatever that might mean)?

Exactly.
Some other similar expression samples you may find in J-Pop lyrics would be:
「まとう」 光を身にまとい 今 大空へと羽ばたく 輝きをまとい あなたを探して
「まといつく」 心にまといついた悲しみは 消えることはない 永遠に
「まとわりつく」過去の記憶がまとわりついて 今夜はひとり 眠れない

ありがとうございました, and thanks for those helpful examples. Normally I don't even try to understand J-pop songs (too difficult) but this one had such a catchy tune that I felt I had to try and work out the meaning.
