Postby nagareboshi » Sun 10.18.2009 8:24 am

Hello there,

what is the difference between ~そうもない and ~そうにない?
I know that そうもない is the negative form of そうだ. But I just can't figure out where the difference between そうにない and そうもない is. Any help is highly appreciated!

Hi nagareboshi,

It is likely to rain. / It looks like rain.
雨が降りそうにない and 雨が降りそうもない are both negative form of that.

The difference is not that big. Only a subtle nuance.
In this case, "も" adds some feeling like "even" to the sentence.
However, as you know, Japanese is a high context language. If you provide me the sample sentence you came across, I could explain the specific nuance.

Hope it helps.
(Btw, I like your name.)

Hi NileCat,

thanks for your answer :)

Here are the sentences that I came across.

Thank you!

It emphasizes the speaker's personal opinion by using も instead of に.
"I can't even imagine it is possible...." (I'm not sure the nuance in English though)

The speaker tells the fact (or prediction) in a kind of objective and straightforward manner.
