…てもうた grammar question

Postby 7daytrial » Sat 11.07.2009 7:37 am

I've heard: やってもうた before and was wondering what もうた means?

I've also heard it in this situation:

Someone notices a ghost looking at them and he says: 俺見えてもうた

I've searched google, but couldn't find anything about it. Nor could I find it in Tae Kim's Grammar Guide.

It's a dialect of Western Japan. (Mainly in Osaka)

やってもうた = やってしまった
俺見えてもうた = 俺(には)見えてしまった

Thanks!

That makes sense.

I just realized I had a book on basic 関西弁.

It also mentions that しまった in kansai-ben is しもった, but is often shortened to もた.

It's common to change the past tense of verbs ending in XXあう from XXあった to XXおうた:

もらった→もろうた
買った→買うた (こうた)
違った→違うた (ちごうた)
習った→習うた (なろうた)

This もうた follows the same pattern but is taken one step further.

(By the way, I've never heard てもうた before, but realized it was related to this when I read NileCat's post. Of the examples above, I've only seen 買うた in use, so the others might not be as common)
