A few questions bout kanji.

Alright I am finishing up learning my kana, and I have decided to try my hand at deciphering Kanji, however, I am quit confused.
I have done LOTS of reading from many different sources, but they all seem to gloss over what I really want to know...
I'm sorry if this is repetitive!

Does each symbol always have ONE meaning, with many pronunciations,
or does each pronunciation have a different meaning?
Is the on reading have a different meaning?
Is the on reading when the kanji symbol is COMPELTELY alone,
or just when not paired with any other kanji?
How do you decipher meaning from two kanji paired together?

If anyone could help me out (you don't have to answer all, these are just my basic questions) that'd be great!

You should always study the kanji in context. One word in English can have many possible translations into Japanese and it's just impossible to figure out which one to use if you don't know the context the kanji is usually used in. Also the same kanji can have different pronunciation to express different things. For example: 家　can be read as 「うち」 when it means "home as the place I live in" and 「いえ」 when it means "house as the building".
So I'd advise not to learn the kanji by itself but to learn words that include the kanji instead.
