Foreign names in japanese
When you write your name in japanese, do you write it's pronounciation? What do you do if there isn't such a sound in japanese or your name ends with consonant?

You basically try to get close to it. Names that end in consonants like "Scott", would be something like スコット (sukotto).
My name (Justin) is written ジャスティン.
I hope this helps explain it a little.

Re: Foreign names in japanese
It seems we use both of ヤアニス and ヤーニス.
I found a composer who is called ヤーニス・メディンシュ (Yanis Medinsh). Is ヤーニス・イヴァノフス (Jānis Ivanovs) same pronunciation? in that case, ヤーニス might be more popular than ヤアニス.

If you mean a long a like in "paper", then it would probably be something more like イエニス.
If you mean a long a as in "held longer"... then it would be something like ヤーニス.
I'm guessing that by the way you wrote ヤアニス with the extra a sound that you meant the "held longer" long a sound. To extend a sound in katakana, you use the ー line to extend the sound. (In hiragana you add a kana, like えい for a long e sound, おう or おお for long o, etc.)
Like ちいず (vs ちず) in hiragana would be written チーズ in katakana for the long i sound (which means "cheese")

Yes it is.

Thank you both!

Except there's no other such post in this thread. I'm thinking maybe he accidentally necroposted, then edited his necropost to read what it says now instead of simply deleting it. Still, as it is now, it looks funny.

Personally I don't have any problem with necroposts as long as they add something valuable to the discussion.

It's edited. I actually posted like a two paragraph long explanation.
Probably should have kept it there..
