Question about 喜びに
Hi, I'm having trouble understanding one of the Core sentences: 人々は喜びに沸いた。I can't figure out why に is used. I've scoured the internet, various dictionaries and grammar books, but I've gotten nowhere. In this sense, is 喜び a noun or a base 2 verb? My research tells me that only な-adjectives can become adverbial nouns by switching な for に, but I don't think that 喜び can become a な-adjective, so how is it acting as an adverb here? I'm completely lost, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Question about 喜びに
I am not sure how to exactly explain this, but try not to look at it as adverb, but rather a noun + に + verb.
喜びに沸く = Excited with joy
喜びに輝く = Sparkle with joy
Not sure if this に is related to these other sentence I will give.
大きな音に驚いてしまった = Surprised by/from the big sound
子供たちの上手な歌に感心した = Moved by the children's good singing
試験の結果を心配していたが、「よくできていましたよ。」という先生の言葉に安心した = I was worried about the result of the exam, but I was relieved by the teachers words "-----"
As you can see, all these sentences uses noun + ni + verb.
It's a common structure to see, and the verbs usually are related to some kind of feeling/emotion.
Not sure if this is any help, but I am sure someone who can explain it better will come along.

Re: Question about 喜びに
「喜び」は「喜ぶ」の連用形
I take 連用形 as nouns in English
喜びに輝く = Sparkle with joy,
maybe It's right, with.... is adverbial,right?
same here
