Basic Question form.

Postby Smudge » Fri 10.15.2010 11:54 am

Sorry guys, I'm very new to all this. I've just finished learning my hirogana and am starting my katakana now. In the meantime I've been looking at basic sentence structure.

How would I ask the following.

How is... your elbow? etc This is in regards to say an injury

How is... your family? regarding to a friends well being for example
or
How is...that done? regarding a magic trick for example.

Suppose I'm just wondering if the single use of "how is" or its equivalent, will be used across many examples like this.

I think you mean hiragana. ;) It's very important to get your sounds right in Japanese, 'cause a mistake can render you incomprehensible more readily than you might think.

How is... your elbow? etc This is in regards to say an injury

I believe this would be ○○はどうですか (_____ wa dou desu ka -- note that ○○ is the Japanese way of writing a blank). So, for example, ひざはどうですか (hiza wa dou desu ka) = How's your knee?

How is... your family? regarding to a friends well being for example

家族はお元気ですか? ("kazoku wa o-genki desu ka?") -- literally "Is your family healthy?"

How is...that done? regarding a magic trick for example.

それはどうしますか? ("sore wa dou shimasu ka?")
