I have some questions about this text?

Postby chibola » Sat 06.18.2011 10:45 pm

From the novel "Satou Kashi no Dangan wa Uchinukenai":

藻屑は憎しみと愛情表現の区別がつかない子だ いつもどこか間違っていて本人もそれに気付けないでいる。

I don't really understand what all of it is saying. I have a vague idea of what, but the "soreni" after the "mo" is confusing me. And I'm not sure what type of "tsuku" from "tsukanai" is being used. Could someone please translate this for me? I'm trying to read the novel by myself and I've been making slow but sure progress :(

Let me give you a rough translation. Then re-read the sentence and I think you will see the pieces coming together, making sense together:
"Mokuzu is a girl who can't really tell the difference between expression of affection and hatred. She always makes some mistake somewhere and she can't even realize this herself."

- I can't tell the difference between Itialian and Spanish.
- Some phenomenon cannot be explained.

Btw, do you really have a question?

Thank you for the reply! I understand why and what it means now. This was really helpful, specially with the examples you provided.

I still don't know how what that "mo sore ni" means, though. But I guess that since you didn't address it, it mustn't be that important or difficult to figure out?

Once again, thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

At least I do not find it difficult. Do not think of "mo sore ni" as one "word" (phrase), it is just using the three words "mo", "sore" and "ni" to say what you want, it just so happens they are used together.
Let me rephrase the sentence slightly to make this obvious:

本人も (間違っていたところ)に 気付けないでいる。
(Even she herself=本人も) (can't notice=気付けないでいる) (where she is mistaken=間違っていたところ)

Xに気づく is a standard expression for "to notice X". (気づける being the casual potential ("be able to"))

And now it just so happens that this X, 間違っているところ, is abbreviated as それ, so you get:
本人も それ・に 気付けないでいる。

Don't feel bad if your thinking now "Damn it, it was that easy..." : )

Damn it, it was that easy :sweatdrop: ?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ELABORATING! I didn't know about Xに気付くbeing a standard expression so I learned something new today.
