Trouble with a thesarus
Hey,
I'm here in guam, and I saw a tip jar at Cinnabon. Except that it didn't say tips. It said

I've never been to Japan yet, although I'm getting closer. But they don't call tips, hints in Japan do they? Or did the sign maker misuse a thesaurus?
Thank you,

That's hilarious. Someone clearly used a dictionary or translator and didn't back-check the translation.

In Japanese, "tip" in the way *THEY* mean it on the jar is チップ. Of course, since people don't tip in Japan, it had to be gairaigo.

Definitely a mistake. "Tip" has several meanings in English, and they're all different words: 先端 or 先, チップ, アドバイス, ヒント...
As a verb, there's チップする (though I think チップをあげる is more common, no?), 倒す, 引っくり返す, etc.

Haha, now that you make it clear the connection seems so obvious! You're such a genius Tony

No, I just had to re-learn to tip when I got back to the States.
