RE: Help with sentence
It depends what you mean by complex sentences. If you're talking about modifying clauses and whatnot, then the following grammar point may be helpful. If you're talking about something else, please feel free to ignore me.
The two sentences. "I have a pen" and "it was used by my father" can be combined into one english sentence "I have a pen which was used by my father."
In the same way
私はペンを持っています。 and それは父に使われた。 can be combined into one sentence.
This is done by taking the verb you want to describe (in this case ぺん) and putting the describing phrase before it.
わたしは 父に使われた ペンを持っている。
One thing to note is that the noun describing the object cannot be in て or ます form.
That explanation might have been a bit too complicated. :/ Hope it helps.

RE: Help with sentence
My suggestion is buy a sentence pattern book. The one I used a few years ago was http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... 3?v=glance
Obviously, there are MANY ways to make complex sentences. That's why it took Ms. Chino an entire book to explain the common ones. <g>

Doh!
Well, you need to upgrade your nouns to version 2.0. That will increase the versitility of your nouns 10 fold. =)
