Confused about the usage of に

Post by SebastianSwede » Mon 03.25.2013 6:31 am

Hi!

I recently found this sentence; ドアを閉めてから、鍵を置いてきたこと気がついた。 After I shut the door, I remembered I had left my key behind.

I wonder, what function does the particle に have here? Is it a indirect object marker? If that's the case, could you point me in the direction of a good article that explains this usage of the indirect object marker, or could you give me a good explanation yourselves?

Thanks!
Sebastian

It is as you say an indirect object marker and it connects 鍵を置いてきたこと with 気がついた. There really isn't much explanation that can be done about it.

You could try reading these pages if you want to know more about に:

It shows what your verb is targetted toward, as opposed to what it's affecting/modifying. Even figuratively, when you notice something you're not doing anything to it, so the を particle is inappropriate.
