RE: ~ku aru
Which would be the same as あかい, so why would you want to do that? Anyway, I'm pretty sure the answer is no.

ryuubu: I don't think so. 'Desu' and 'arimasu' are NOT the same--their meanings are not equal, so you can't replace one with the other. I won't say I'm 100% on this, but I'm pretty sure 'akaku arimasu/-masen' is grammatically incorrect.

OK, I was hoping to stay out of this because I don't KNOW. But I thought I remembered seeing this form.
I've done a little research. I still don't know. But I'm thinking this IS a very polite form still in use.
Does anyone know for sure? And if so, is this form more or less polite than using de gozaimasu?

I don't see why it wouldn't really if you treat
あかく ない
as the adverbial form of 'red' meaning 'not existant red-ly'
if anyone follows my thinking. I'll ask a Japanese person methinks

Well, I don't think ~くあります is used often, but doing a google search for various i-adj, such as 美しい, there are a lot of occurences of 美しくある. I also found some websites talking about how words have been contracted in Japanese, http://homepage3.nifty.com/jgrammar/ja/colum011.htm and if you do a find for 美しくあった you will find some interesting info about how くあった→かった. Sorry it is all in Japanese.

InsanityRanch -- Yes, I noticed that, there is also an English site but the lessons do not seem to be the same. I was hoping to just give the English explaination, but I didn't see it.
