I just got dissed....

Postby spank » Fri 12.09.2005 5:08 pm

by a nihonjin.

I was talking to a japanese in canada, and she said that i'm okay at japanese but my grasp of ga, mo, ni is all screwed up.

case in point: the causative tense.
I was trying to say stuff like
"i intend to let you help me learn japanese" and
"I also will help your english"
how do i say these sentences correctly?
I'm all screwed up using the causative and using "kureru, ageru, itadaku, morau" in combinations with the passive.

How would i say "I will make you teach him english"
I'm not sure who is the agent that gets ga, ni, wo and so on.
Also, how would i say "I will allow you to teach me english"
私も手伝わせてもらう = i am allowed to help too?

clarification guys? or any good websites about this?
all i really need is the japanese translations of the above.

thanks

Don't see it as being dissed, see it as having someone point out your weak points (which is VERY rare and helpful). I still have problem with subjects sometimes when talking. It's hard to clarify who does what and still be able to speak naturally instead of like you're talking out of a text book.

In any case, here are some translations for you.

"i intend to let you help me learn japanese"

This seems kind of haughty to say. In Japanese (equally haughty) you would say something like 日本語を教えてもらいたい。 There are more haughty ways of saying it, but it's not goot to say them, I don't think. Normally, one would just say 日本語を教えてお願いします。 or 日本語を教えてくれませんか?

"I also will help your english"

私もあなたの英語を手伝う。

How would i say "I will make you teach him english"

私はあなたに彼に英語を教えさせる。

I'm not sure who is the agent that gets ga, ni, wo and so on.

You can use に twice in that sentence, but just like in English, it sounds a little strange.

Also, how would i say "I will allow you to teach me english"

What's with all the haughty sentences? This is a good way to get punched, I think.. :/
私はあなたに英語を教えてもいいですか?

Does that help?

kinda funny. Most students complain that Japanese people are always complimenting them on their great Japanese, even when they know they are mangling it.

yes yes, this is the information i needed. thanks. many of the japanese i met are disaffected nationalists. they disdain their country and are cynical towards western culture, and towards me.

these japanese love to laugh at my "mangled" efforts to speak japanese. did i mention that they love to get drunk and prank call me at 1am? anyways, they are the only ones that are helping me in person, so i take their critique in stride. they can't explain grammar as well as you guys, so that's why i'm asking these rather strange questions.

ps. i've told the japanese guys to be brutally honest with me about my errors. i'm not going to learn anything if they continue to compliment me despite making mistakes...

peace out B)
