arimasu / imasu

Postby leoo » Wed 01.11.2006 1:11 am

konnichiwa,
I'm pretty new to learning japanese and have been using a whole bunch of different sources to help me learn.

Anyways, I had learnt that imasu is for animate objects; while arimasu is for inanimate objects.

But while using Rosetta Stone today, they gave me the sentence "kuruma wa akai iro o shite imasu".

My question is, why doesn't it end with "arimasu"?:|

"The car is doing the red."

WELL! That's an odd sentence...
But you're correct. Imasu for living things, arimasu for objects.

To put a verb in its -te form (so suru- to do -becomes shite) and then to add imasu (so, you form shiteimasu) is just like putting on the -ing suffix in English. :D

Edit: Examples:

To eat= taberu = tabete = tabeteimasu (or tabeteiru, in more casual speach)
To listen = kiku = kiite = kiiteimasu
To read = yomu = yonde = yondeimasu

It's an odd sentence only in the sense that it's a Japanese sentence. 'Imasu' in that sentence is functioning as an auxiliary verb in a gramatical structure that you'll soon learn in due time. But if you want to get ahead of yourself, this webpage will help you:

http://www.guidetojapanese.org/enduring.html

By the way, the 「〜ている」 grammar expresses more than just an on-going action depending on the context it appears in. In this case, it means (in far too literal English) that the state of being red exists.

(Slaps his forehead)
Oh now I understand...

So 色をする is one of those constructions Noun + する which turn nouns into verbs... I googled 色をする with the most common tenses of する and got 500K+ hits, so I guess I can write it down on my vocabulary copybook...

Thank you skrhgh3b先輩!! Oh, and leoo, I'm terribly sorry I misled you last night... Guess the subject was 車 after all...:| My bad

Googleの検索結果だと思います。

Oh. Terribly sorry about that. Well I (tried to) say that it was not the first time I used Google in that way, so I had a busy evening yesterday deleting a lot of constructions I thought I had learned by Googling (*cough cough*;)). And that Cocoさん's help, as usual, has been priceless.

To sum up what Cocoさん wrote, using Google that way is rubbish because in the hits I got there might have been other words before 色 or after する with a completely different grammar structure (for example, being part of a relative clause).
