I know tori means bird, but does it also mean "take"?:)

取る (とる)
Meaning: to take | to pick up | to harvest | to earn | to choose

To make it polite, you change ~ru to ~ri and add masu.

torimasu

However, when it is used in compoung verbs and the such, it does become "tori" (the stem form of toru).
