Desu or Des?

Postby sarcastic_enigma » Mon 02.20.2006 6:47 pm

I've looked at many books and websites and they've all had different pronunciations for the word. Is it said Desu or Des? Or either way?

Actually, I think it can be both, and it especially depends on the word that comes after it. But most of the time, it's "desu." And a lot of times the word will sound like "des" because of the speed at which it's spoken. ;)

It is pretty much always written desu, but you're right, it is often pronounced des. It seems to me, and I could be completely wrong here, that when it's pronounced desU, there actually seems to be a slight stress on the U. Sometimes I get the impression that it's stressing the politeness or as like a drawn out ~Uuuu sound. I also hear it pronounced that way in song, but hardly ever in speech. It is weird and I haven't completely pinned it down, but mostly that's because I hardly ever hear it pronounced 'desu' in day-to-day speech. Desu isn't the only time the final u is dropped. I hear it a lot, especially with this weird hiss I hear when listening to younger guys meeting eachother for the first time. Endings like gozaimas--, etc. I like it, it's easier to say, so I probably do it too much.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe anything ever comes after desu. It's almost universaly the last word of a sentence. I can't think of any time it would come between two words.

Usually when su is the last character in a word, the u is ommited, and you get just s. So the pronunciation would be s, but as there is no s in the Japanese alphabet, you would always write it su.

...desu ga...
...desu kara...
You'll stick things after desu sometimes when you connect sentences. In those cases, there is more of the "u" sound that's heard. Not much though. But saying "desga" sounds a bit strange. The "u" does come out, it's just a bit whispered.

I agree with b4d0m3n, it's almost always pronounced "des" but never written "des" in romaji, it's always written "desu."
as in:
"What is it"
is written
"Nan desu ka"
but pronounced
"Nan des ka."

I thought about those as soon as I pushed submit, but as they're copulas and not words, I didn't feel the need to correct my post.

I'm also pretty sure that you do not pronounce the u in those as well.
*tries it out a couple times*

Yeah, almost positive they're non-vocalized.

I wouldn't say never. I've seen plenty of books that write it des.

Ergo, roumaji is evil because everyone does it different.

Pronouncing the final "u" sounds makes it sound much more polite. That's about it. For normal speaking, just saying "des" is fine.

I've never once heard the "u" explicitly pronounced. It can sometimes be a vague "eh" (des-eh), although it's very faint (like a short puff of air).

To clear all this up, you only pronounce the u when you're trying to be polite or formal, in day to day talk among normal people you just say des. But any way, most young japanese don't even say desu, they say dayoo, だよー。

むずかしいだよー!
