First, Last and Third

Do you have a translation question?

First, Last and Third

Postby somenube » Sat 12.13.2008 2:27 pm

Japanese has given birth to many "firsts" for me and often I need to express this to people. I know 一回 and 二回 mean first and second and 初めて and 先ず mean first but I don't know how to use them in context. Here are some sentences I would like to say:

1. 日本は行った初めてです。This is the first time I've been to Japan.
2.このコップが一杯ですよ。 This is my first cup.
3.??会います???This is the last time I will see you.

ありがとうございます!

日本に行ったことは初めてです。
2.このコップが一杯ですよ。 This is my first cup.

このカップは一杯目ですよ。
3.??会います???This is the last time I will see you.

初めましてお目にかかります。(And now you know where the greeting はじめまして came from.)

ありがとうございます!

どういたしまして。

一回 and 二回 are more like "one time" and "two times"; you need a modifier (目 as a suffix for some counters, 第 as a prefix for others) to make them into "first time" and "second time". まず is used more for listing an order: まず、弁講師を全員殺そう。First, let's kill all the lawyers.

Do you proounce "目"'s kanji's onyomi or kunyomi?

Are these correct? 訂正をしてくれて下さい。:B

They're all め. However, the 目 in お目にかかります part has nothing to do with first, last, etc.; it's literally "eye"

Okay.
日本のページに初めてお目に質問を書きますなあ。

Not okay.
日本のページに三回目質問を書きます。

Okay.

This is incredibly useful, thank you! :D
Here is another attempt at the middle sentence: 日本のページに初めて質問を書きますなあ。

Looks OK to me, except I think that なあ is a bit too strong to use with ます form.

Depends on if you're in Japan or not when you say it. If you are in Japan you would says 「日本に来たのは初めてです。」If you are about to go to Japan and still in another country. 「日本に行くのは初めてです。」

2.このコップが一杯ですよ。 This is my first cup.

As rich advised 一杯目 is correct.

3.??会います???This is the last time I will see you.

I think rich_vh misread the English. He gave you "This is the first time we meet" rather than the last time.
There are many ways you could say this, here is one 「もう会うことはないと思います」
そうだ、嬉しいんだ、生きる喜び!
