Do you have a translation question?

Postby snmcrae » Fri 04.03.2009 12:38 am

In an effort to relieve the tedium of my studies for JLPT 2, I thought I would try going through a manga translation. 名探偵コナン is good because it is fully furigana-ed, unlike ブラックジャック which I like even more but is a lot more tedious to read. Some parts, as you will be able to tell, I really need help with.

I randomly chose a the story from Volume 4, Case #4:
はちあわせた二人組
"Encounter with the Bad Guys"

Frame 1:
[external shot of the Shinkansen speeding along the tracks]

Frame 2:
[Lan's father, a detective, is trying to shave in his seat on the train]
Father: Good grief...

Frame 3:
[Lan is sitting next to Conan, and across from her father]
Lan: It's not ordinary for someone to shave on the train on the day of their friend's wedding ceremony.
Father: Be quiet!

Frame 4:
[Father leans in toward Lan, looking irritated]
Father: What choice do I have? My customer meeting went late last night and I overslept.
Lan: You don't say! And yet you were drunk and sleeping in the entryway...

Frame 5:
[Lan leans across and fixes her father's tie]
Father: Yeah, well... for adults its all part of getting together.
Lan: Yeah, yeah...

Frame 6:
[Father looks exasperated as he glances away from Lan]
Father: Hmph... Well I only brought you along because you badgered me about wanting to go!
Lan: But the ceremony is in Kyoto! I've never been there before!

Frame 7:
[Lan turns to address Conan sitting next to her]
Lan: You want to go see it, right Conan?
Conan: Um... right!

Frame 8:
[Father looks sternly at Conan]
Father: And just how did this one get to tag along?
Lan: Well, leaving him in Tokyo was not really an option.

Frame 9:
[Father still has his eyes on Conan]
Father: Lord... and we still haven't gotten any word from his parents travelling overseas?
Lan: No word...
Conan: (thought bubble) Crap!

Frame 10:
[Conan gets out of his seat and starts heading down the aisle, explaining as he goes]
Conan: I, I have to go to the toilet. (Geez... I'm not being a freeloader. I'd just like to go too.)

Frame 11:
[As he heads down the aisle towards the bathroom, Conan thinks about his nemeses]
Conan: (All this is their fault!)

Frame 12:
[Conan is standing in front of the door at the end of the cabin, waiting for it to open, thinking about his past]
Conan: (They made me take that strange medicine, which left me with this small body. And...)

Frame 13:
[The door opens and two tall men dressed in black are standing there]
Conan: ?!

Frame 14:
[The men in black don't even see Conan initially, they are just surveying the cabin]
Conan: (Th... The...)

Frame 15:
[Conan's face shows shock and a bit of fear]
Conan: (The men in black!!)

I'll stop here for this entry and pick it up again later.

Please let me know where the translation misses the meaning, or the nuance, of the original.

Welcome back! I seem to recall you doing a translation of Shin-chan a while back, and now you've picked Conan. Those are my 2 favorite manga. So I'll be happy to lend a hand this time around as well.
snmcrae wrote:[Conan gets out of his seat and starts heading down the aisle, explaining as he goes]

Everything you have looks spot on except for this one. He's not referring here to going to Kyoto with them, but rather the whole situation of them having to always take care of him because he was turned into a little kid by the "Men in Black".

This phrase 「好きで◎しているんじゃなない」"I'm not doing X because I want to" is often used when someone is forced or feels obligated to do something and then receives a complaint from someone else about it. I'd maybe translate it as
"Sheesh, it's not like I wanted to come with you guys anyway."

Now that makes perfect sense. Thanks! I'd never have been able to put that together on my own.

Here's the next section.

Frame 16:
[Conan flashes back to a scene where his bigger, teenage self is lying bloodied, face down in a field, with the two Men in Black (#1 and #2) standing over him]
Conan: (narrating) It's them...
#2: Is he a hitman?
#1: No. He was clumsy with a gun.

Frame 17:
[In the flashback, #1 holds a large pill in his hand]
Conan: (narrating) Because of them...
#1: I'll use this new drug that the organization has developed.

Frame 18:
[In the flashback, #1 holds Conan's bloodied head by the hair and crams the pill in his mouth]
Conan: (narrating) I...
#1: This prototype hasn't been used in humans yet.

Frame 19:
[Back in real time, the two Men in Black look down at Conan]
#2: Hm?

Frame 20:
[#2 looks down at Conan, who is beginning to panic]
#2: Hey...
Conan: (Holy crap!)

Frame 21:
[Bracing himself, Conan recalls the words of his mentor]
Mentor: Be careful, Shinichi! If they knew that you were still living in the body of a child, they would definitely come after you.
Conan: (They recognize me!)

Frame 22:
[#2 brushes Conan aside as he moves into the cabin]
#2: You're in our way! Step aside!
Conan: (Huh?)

Frame 23:
[The Men in Black pass by Conan]
#2: Pfft. Brat...
Conan: (Can it be? They don't realize that the pill caused me to get small.)

Frame 24:
[The Men in Black take seats in the cabin, and Conan walks by them in the aisle]
Conan: (If I get the chance, it would be perfect if I could steal the pill from them!)

Frame 25:
[Conan makes it back to his seat, with the Men in Black a few seats away]
Conan: (If I can find out the ingredients of that pill, Hakase can figure out a way to return me to my true form. And when I return to my true form...)

Frame 26:
[Conan looks back at the Men In Black]
Conan: (When I'm back to being high school detective Shinichi Kudo...)

Frame 27:
[Conan is looking very determined here]
Conan: (I will expose all their crimes! Count on it!)

Frame 28:
[Exterior shot of the train speeding along, with Conan's voice-over]
Conan: (But... what on earth are they doing here?)

Frame 29:
[Conan looks back at the Men in Black who are getting up out their seats]

Frame 30:
[He watches as they walk out of the cabin]
Conan: (Where are they going?)

Frame 31:
[Conan follows them and watches as they climb some stairs]
Conan: (To the second level?)

Frame 32:
[He watches as they take seats at a dining table]
Conan: (Dining car? Are they meeting with someone?)

Frame 33:
[Conan hides a few tables away and spies on the Men in Black]
Conan: (Who could it be with?)

Frame 34:
[Conan peers out from his vantage point behind a table]
Conan: (Well, I'll be... It's with their consigliere.)

Frame 35:
[Suddenly a female hand grabs Conan's arm]
Conan: Huh?

... to be continued...

I've used that construction when complaining to The Powers That Be at my company about the lack of pay raises, saying Got a lot of nods and うん、うん from the other drivers.

Not quite. You might want to have another look at the furigana on this one.「 殺しやすかい?」 is「 バラしやすかい?」「バラす」 is a kind of criminal slang for "to kill", maybe something like "ice" or "waste" and 「やす」is just a slangy way of saying 「ます」. So perhaps something like this: "Should we waste the kid?"

まずい here means ill-advised or dangerous, because IIRC, in this scene they're in a public place where the sound of a gun would quickly bring people running. So maybe take a little liberty and say something like "Cool it with the gun, I've got a better idea."

Frame 24:
[The Men in Black take seats in the cabin, and Conan walks by them in the aisle]
Conan: (If I get the chance, it would be perfect if I could steal the pill from them!)

The second half is modifying the first, so "This is the perfect chance to steal that pill from them." Also, there's no "if".

Frame 25:
[Conan makes it back to his seat, with the Men in Black a few seats away]
Conan: (If I can find out the ingredients of that pill, Hakase can figure out a way to return me to my true form. And when I return to my true form...)

Hakase is title rather than a name, so I'd change that to "The Professor".

Frame 34:
[Conan peers out from his vantage point behind a table]
Conan: (Well, I'll be... It's with their consigliere.)

Here he's still wondering, not certain. So maybe, "No way, could it be their boss?"

Those two short lines were giving me fits. I'm glad I can completely understand them now.

Moving on...

Frame 36:
[Lan has Conan by the arm]
Lan: Hey! What are you doing here?!
Conan: La... Lan!

Frame 37:
[Lan looks disapprovingly at Conan while they stand in the aisle of the dining car]
Conan: I, I was hungry.
Lan: Didn't you just finish eating lunch?

Frame 38:
[Lan drags Conan back towards their seats]
Lan: Argh! Don't go making trouble.
Conan: ah, ah... wait up...

Frame 39:
[Conan looks back as Lan leads him away from the dining car]
Conan: Damn! In this case...

Frame 40:
[Conan takes a piece of gum out of its wrapper]
Conan: I'll wad up this gum...

Frame 41:
[Conan takes off his glasses, behind Lan's back]
Conan: ...and then stuff this little listening device I got from the Professor...

Frame 42:
[Conan stuffs the the bug inside the gum]
Conan: ...inside it.

Frame 43:
[Conan stops by the seats of the Men in Black]
Conan: And then I'll put it...

Frame 44:
[He kneels down and reaches under the seat]
Conan: ...under their seat.

Frame 45:
[Lan turns around and catches Conan in the act]
Lan: Aha! Up to something again!

Frame 46:
[Lan looks under the seat to se what Conan had put there]
Lan: Aah! Putting gum here... This kind of prank is NOT nice!

Frame 47:
[Conan grabs for his gum, but Lan quickly disposes of it]
Conan: Give it back...
Lan: You should wrap this gum in paper and put it in the ashtray.

Frame 48:
[Lan chastises Conan]
Lan: Understood?
Conan: Um, yes.

Frame 49:
[Lan turns back around to head back to her seat, and Conan quickly reaches for the ashtray]
Lan: I swear...

Frame 50:
[Lan turns around quickly and Conan pretends like he's no doing anything]
Conan: La-laa...

Frame 51:
[Lan drags Conan back to their seat]
Conan: (Well... for now it's still in the ashtray, so...)

Frame 52:
[Conan looks back at the ashtray]
Conan: (I hope they don't find it there.)

Frame 53:
[The door at the end of the cabin opens, and the Men in Black walk back in, with a white suitcase in hand]

Frame 54:
[Conan glances back as the walk up the aisle]
Conan: (Oo! They're back!)

Frame 55:
[Conan reaches for his glasses and recalls what the Professor had told him about the glasses]
Conan: (Well... if I remember correctly, in order to pick up sound from the bug...)
Profesor: The listening device is on the right front of the glasses, and the earphone is on the left! With this dial, if you can tune in the frequency, then a special sound wave will stimulate your eardrum, and it will only be audible while you are wearing the glasses!

Frame 56:
[Conan realizes the device is working, as he can now hear the Men in Black talking, via the tricked out glasses]
#2: Finally, I can smoke!
Conan: (I heard that!)

Frame 57:
[He eavesdrops electronically on the MIB, but #2 is looking down at the ashtray]
#2: Huh? Something's in here... what is it?
Conan: (Crap!)

Frame 58:
[#2 looks back up at #1]
#2: Gum. It's just gum. Anyway, the person before us probably put it there.
Conan: (Close call...)

...to be continued...

All of it looks good except for one part of this -- verb X + だけ generally means "Just doing X", so in this case it's "You can hear the voice just by wearing the glasses" (in other words, you would usually expect to have to put something in your ear to hear it but in this case all you have to do is wear the glasses).

For the other use, I guess you'd use 場合だけ or 時にだけ in place of だけで...?

Yeah. Now, I wonder what the difference between 時にだけ and 時だけに is; from the google examples it looks to me like they're the same thing, although the former only gets 1/2 as many hits.

Looks good! I only wonder why you romanized 蘭 as Lan rather than Ran; just personal preference?

Probably. Because 蘭 is pronounced "Lan (2nd tone)" in Chinese, IIRC from way back in the day, and this just struck me as a very Sino-Japanese name, kind of like Mei or Yuu or the like. And "Lan" is much more feminine-sounding to my western ear then "Ran" could ever be.

Frame 59:
[Conan sneaks a peek back at the MIB]
Conan: (Huh? That's strange...)

Frame 60:
[Conan recalls seeing the MIB earlier carrying a different briefcase]
Conan: (If I'm not mistaken, they were carrying a black briefcase when they went to the dining car. But now they don't have it anymore.)

Frame 61:
[He focusses in on a large white suitcase standing in the aisleway next to the MIB]
Conan: (Instead they have that large suitcase. Perhaps...)

Frame 62:
[Conan continues to eavesdrop on their conversation]
#2: Damn, bro, that was an easy transaction.
Conan: (Aha...)

Frame 64:

Conan: ("Jin" and "Uokka"...)

Frame 65:
[Conan steals another glance back at the MIB]
Conan: (Are those your codenames?!)

Frame 66:

#2: 4 mill, just for handing over that black briefcase. I wonder what the hell was in it?

Frame 67:

#1: Information about the money.
#2: The money...

Frame 68:
#1: If that information is used wisely, 4 million will be no problem.
#2: I get it. That's why that guy was so happy.
#1: Yup. Now we'll go back to our seat and look down at the view and chuckle a bit.

Frame 69:
[#1 has a sinister smile on his face]
#1: The final view...

Frame 70:
[#2 looks a bit worried]

#2: Final view?
#1: As far as the organization is concerned, that guy is of no further value.

Frame 71:
#1: There were explosives packed in that black briefcase we handed over to him.

Frame 72:
#1: A strong shock will cause it to immediately become a functioning bomb...

Frame 73:
#2: Yea, but... if he so much as drops that case...
#1: Don't worry! As far as he knows he's finally gotten his hands on important information. He's not gonna drop it! Anyway, it's set to explode at 3:10.

#2: A time bomb?
#1: No. When that moment comes, without even knowing it, he'll personally trigger the switch.

Frame 75:
#1: Mwahaha... 10 seconds after that switch has been triggered, he and this train will both be...

I think this is probably "gold" rather than "money"; you have the furigana, but き, 金の indicates to me that 金 is read as きん and thus is gold rather than money.

Conan: ("Jin" and "Uokka"...)

These ought to be Gin and Vodka. IIRC all the members of the crime syndicate have different types of alcohol for their code names.

Frame 66:
[#2 reaches down and taps on the suitcase]
#2: 4 mill, just for handing over that black briefcase. I wonder what the hell was in it?

Maybe you're converting from yen to dollars, but 4億円 is 400 million yen, not 4 million.

Frame 67:
[#1 lights up as he explains to #2]
#1: Information about the money.
#2: The money...

As Yudan said, this is きん, gold rather than かね, money.

Frame 68:
#1: If that information is used wisely, 4 million will be no problem.
#2: I get it. That's why that guy was so happy.
#1: Yup. Now we'll go back to our seat and look down at the view and chuckle a bit.

やっこさん could be male or female, but the English "guy" makes it sound like a man. The tough part here is that later on Conan investigates several passengers with black briefcases to find out who Gin and Vodka passed the info to, some male and some female. The Japanese is ambiguous on gender in a way that's difficult to recreate in English. Maybe you can change guy to "mark" or "sucker" or something that is gender ambiguous. Then all the other cases of "he" and "him" also need to be reworded to be gender neutral as well.

The last sentence is not about them, but about the mark who they passed on the case to as indicated by だろう, "probably".
So: ‘S Probably gone back to sit down, enjoy the view and chuckle."

Frame 70:
[#2 looks a bit worried]
#2: Final view?
#1: As far as the organization is concerned, that guy is of no further value.

Needs to be gender neutral as above.

Frame 71:
#1: There were explosives packed in that black briefcase we handed over to him.

Needs to be gender neutral as above.

Frame 72:
#1: A strong shock will cause it to immediately become a functioning bomb...

It contains a bomb that will be activated by a strong shock.

Frame 73:
#2: Yea, but... if he so much as drops that case...
#1: Don't worry! As far as he knows he's finally gotten his hands on important information. He's not gonna drop it! Anyway, it's set to explode at 3:10.

Needs to be gender neutral as above.

Frame 74:
