何をってわけじゃない

Postby keatonatron » Thu 05.14.2009 2:03 am

I saw an advertisement on the train for a 専門学校 that deals with engineering or something. It had a picture of a guy with this quote:

モノづくりがしたかったんだよね。何をってわけじゃないけど。

The second part puzzled me, and I've been trying to figure out just exactly what it means.

My best guess is that it's really "何を?", as in:
何を[作ればいいだろう]というわけではない - i.e. It's not a matter of not knowing what I want to make.

But it seems like it could also be showing that the focus is [not] on 何を, and that he just wants to make something, no matter what it is:

[XXを作りたい]というわけではない

So is it implying that he knows what he wants to make, but doesn't know how to do it? Or that he just wants to make something, and doesn't care what it is? Or something else altogether?

My guess, just to throw it in there and see how it measures up.

"that doesn't mean I knew on what" or

If someone asked him, nani o, he would have answered wake wakannai :)

Now to wait and see how off I am.

The way I see it along the same lines as you:
"Don't ask me WHAT I want to build, I just know that I have to BUILD."
He's not concerned with what he's building, but rather just loves the process of building SOMETHING.

At least, that's how I see it.

You totally don't understand!

Although I will admit, this:

If someone asked him, nani o, he would have answered wake wakannai :)

Was pretty funny.

He just wanted to build something, he didn't care what.
