自分に負けない

I've been struggling to understand the relatively common phrase 「自分に負けない」 for some time.

My guess is that 「自分に負けるな！」 would mean something like "Don't let things get you down."

Also, since it's 自分, I'm thinking that it refers to becoming discouraged due to "perceived suffering/hardship" or negative thinking (Ex. "Man, life in general just blows!", as opposed to "undeniable suffering" -- Ex. "Oh my god, hungry piranhas are feasting on my entrails.")

I am on the right track?

I think it is as simple as something like "Don't let yourself be defeated."

If you translate it literally it means "don't lose to yourself," so I think you (OP) are on the right track.

Kind of like "Don't shoot yourself in the foot"

「弱い自分に負けるな」
「逃げたい（と思う）自分に負けるな」
「諦めようとする自分に負けるな」
というような意味で使われるのがほとんどでしょうね。
"don't lose to your another yourself" というような感覚でしょうか。
「ダイエットをしているのだから、お菓子を食べたいと思う自分に負けるな」など。

他の意味でも使いますが。
つまり文脈次第ですね。

「理想の自分に負けるな」ならば
一歩先を走っていく、理想通りになった自分の姿を思い描き、その背中を追いかけ、いつか追い抜きなさい。
それまで諦めてはいけない。
というような意味ですね。

もうすこし宗教的、哲学的な使い方をするならば、
「自分に負けるな」は「自我を抑制しなさい」という意味になりますね。"don't be egoist"?
「自分のことを優先してばかりで、他人の言うことに耳を貸さなかったり、他人の気持ちを考えずに行動したりする」
ということは「自分（の欲/自我）に負けている」ということになります。
「自分に負けないようにしなさい」ということは、逆に「他の人を勝たせなさい」ということ。
つまり「他者を優先しなさい」ということですね。

As for an English translation, I guess it comes down to creativity based on the context.
Actually, for your first group of an examples, I think something like "Never give up!" may even be the best for the situation.
