Sentence I don't understand

Hi everybody,
there is a sentence of which meaning I don't manage to get. This sentence is part of an exercise of ch 27 of the 2nd volume of Minna no Nihongo, so it lacks any context.
It is「家族に彼のことを話しましたか。」
It seems to me that it means basically "Whom did you talk to in your family?" or something like that. But why is the object 彼のこと? I was expecting だれ (and indeed kept reading 彼 だれ even though I know that kanji ... )
By the way the answer to that question, which was the exercise itself, is「姉は話しましたが、両親は話しました」
The exercise was about「〜は・・が、〜は・・。」that is the use of the particle ha to mark contrasts.

Yes you're right, I forgot the に while typing ... that makes much more sense ...
