縮れる 縮んじゃった

Post by スーゼン » Sun 10.04.2009 4:36 am

Greetings!

I have a kanji 縮 and two different contexts. I'm curious about the translations.

1. 洗濯機で洗ったら、縮れじゃった。 (if you wash it in the washing machine) it will shrink.

2. 田中さんの髪は縮れています。 Tanaka-san has curly /wavy hair.

I could find the second one 縮れる but the first one is a mystery. I assume the verb means "to shrink". I don't think they are the same word (right?) Plus, what is the contraction "じゃった"? Is it じゃない?

NEVERMIND! :)

I answered my question when I searched the forum for じゃった
the short form of しまう is じゃった, and if it ends in て, the ending is ちゃった
So that changes the translation to "(oh no!) When I washed the (shirt or whatever it is) it shrunk!" (I think).
1. 洗濯機で洗ったら、縮れじゃった。
It's 縮んじゃった Sorry for the typo. That comes from being totally confused

Now that I know what じゃった is I understand the verb conjugation a bit more. It's 縮む. (No wonder I couldn't find it.) Looked it up and it does indeed mean "to shrink, contract, diminish in size".
