roly poly bug
I am learning Japanese with my children, and we have tackled animals, now we are moving on to bugs. My two-year-old really loves the roly bug bugs we find in the yard--also called a wood louse, pillbug and sowbug. Here is a link showing the bug
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/insectlore/rolpilkit.html
We have a picture book from Japan called しげみむら おいしいむら that shows the bug, so am hoping it is something there is a Japanese word for. We did find a Japanese book at the library もりのむしとのはらのむし which pretty much has every bug every known--except for the pillbug.
Thanks!

RE: roly poly bug
this doesn't come from any personal knowledge of mine, but i looked it up in the alc.co.jp database - if you're not using it yet, you should, because it's one of the most wonderful resources for english-speaking learners of japanese available on the internet. anyway, in japanese, a rolly polly or pill bug is called a だんご虫 (dango-mushi).
here's the link:

Thank you, both for the response and the website reference.
