how do you say cool in Japanese

Postby mayosta » Sun 10.09.2005 2:47 pm

How do you describe something as being cool in Japanese? I don't mean cool as in temperature, but cool as in seeing a movie that you really liked and saying it was cool or something. Please post the translation in romanji.

If you want to say someone is cool though, kakkou ii or kakko ii works.

- also, it is romaji, not romanji

So... "Kakkou ii anata desu" would mean "You are cool"? Ii means good. Kakkou?

Anata ha kakkou ii [desu] = You are cool(-looking). "Kakkou ii" literally means "good/nice appearance" or "nice-looking"--it usually refers mostly to appearance/looks.

"Sugoi!" is used more like we say "Cool!" in English. However, if you say "anata ha sugoi desu" it would sound more like "you are incredible." "Sugoi" really means "terrible/fantastic/tremendous/etc"--so it is indicating an extreme--in a good or a bad way. (: But to say "Sugoi!" typically means "wow/amazing/awesome/cool."

My experience:
Kakkou ii seems to be mostly used by girls.
And it's soooo much better than kawaii, because it seems that the only correct way to pronounce kawaii is in a way that makes my blood boil.

i thought that すてき meant cool, but its only an adjective so,
このえいがはすてきですね。。? this movie is cool isnt it? i think thats right but not sure if you can just say すてき! as an exclamation.

Actually, moe is more cute than cool, and if you say that anywhere outside of Akihabara, prepare to be shunned. ;)

Even my Japanese gamer geek friends make fun of people who say moe. :o

I recall hearing moe when watching Densha Otoko. Very interesting.

If a girl calls a guy "kawaii" then something might be wrong. Kawaii seems like a word to be used in regard to "cute" things, and guys don't want to be "cute" (not masculine).

In my mind, "suteki" is used in a more 'refined' way than "sugoi." I would use 'suteki' to talk about a really amazing sunrise, or to compliment my friend in a really gorgeous dress, or maybe the architecture of a really impressive building... "Suteki," for me, means that really amazing kind of 'beautiful' that makes your eyes get really, really wide... or makes your heart skip a beat. ^^; And yes, you can say "Suteki!"
