View topic - 家とうち、どれの？
I'm not sure if 家 and うち can be used the same way.
On genki there's a question: made sweets, read books at home, etc.
My answer was:きょうこさんはお菓子を作ったり、うちで本を読んだりした。
Is there a difference, yes or no?

うち does have the same meaning as 家 and can also be written with this kanji. However 'uchi' is more casual term, referring to your own house (you can refer to another person's house politely with おうち、お家) wheras 'ie' has less strong connotations of the 'home' and is more generic and formal.
Incidentally you can use the word うち as a pronoun to casually refer to yourself.
