Kansai-ben?

Postby mandolin » Tue 11.08.2005 12:19 am

Is this story written in kansai-ben? And... am I using the right term for Osaka-area speech?

That was one of the first sites I ever ended up on to try my hand at reading kana. I didn't really know vocab, I just tried to see if I could make myself read faster.

But now, when I go back, it seems a little odd, even though I can't quite put my finger on exactly -what- is wierd about it. The site, as far as I can tell, doesn't give any reference to where the woman who wrote this was from in japan.

For a little background, the site was made by a woman for her british husband who was having trouble learning japanese. She has more stories and some other nifty things here.

It doesn't look like it is in Osaka-ben or Kansai-ben. Osaka-ben would use "ya" instead of "da" and instead of nai, they would say "hen" わからないー>わからへん. I don't know the specifics of Kansai-ben (except the accents are usually opposite of Tokyo) but that story looks normal to me.

The main narrative is written in standard Japanese, while the speech has a *slightly* old timey quality to it. Definately not Osakaben, just standard colloquial Japanese. If I *had* to place it, I would say it would be around the kansai chubu area, but it's not strong enough to be as specific as Osaka, I don't think.
