Help with a story, please?

Postby Nocturne » Fri 01.20.2006 1:10 am

Hi all, I'm starting to practice my little Japanese knowledge by translating the story of Peach boy at http://www.digital-lib.nttdocomo.co.jp/kikakuten/mukashi/mukashi1/momo.html (the first story), and would really appreciate some help :)

I'm onto page 2 and this is what I have so far:

One day, the old man went up a mountain to collect firewood and the old woman went to the river to do washing. While the old woman was doing the washing, from the upper part of the river, she saw something rather large in appearance coming down the side. A peach…

(If there is anything wrong with my translation, feel free to let me know).

Now here is where I'm stuck. There are 2 repeating lines of:

どんぶり かっしり すっこんごう どんぶり かっしり すっこんごう

Donburi kasshiri sukkon gou Donburi kasshiri sukkon gou

I've scoured nearly every dictionary I can find, but I have no clue what these two lines mean? The only thing I can find is that Donburi (if that's right) refers to a bowl of rice...? Or something?

Anyway, any advice would be appreciated, thankyou.

Hm.. my best guess is it's onomatopoeia for the sound of the peach plunking and surafacing as its carried in the river.

It's interesting that it's not in katakana, though.

EDIT: In re-reading, I had misspelled the word, which is why it couldn't be looked up. Fixed.

i think its words that mimic the sound of sth, like in english, "the birds are chirping", "the cat meows", sqeaking sound, squelch, and so on...in jap, i think "waku waku", meaning excited is one of these...:D

yes, exactly. :)
It's a kind of sound effect for the floating peach on the river.
This part are expressed as 「どんぶらこ どんぶらこ」generally, like this. ↓
http://www.pref.okayama.jp/kikaku/kikak ... index.html

「どんぶらこ」 and 「どんぶり かっしり すっこんごう」are used for only ももたろう story.
(So both are not common onomatopoeia.)
hope it helps.

Thankyou so much everyone :) I was staring at those 2 lines for hours with no avail...

Oh and purple heart - Onomatopoeia is used to show sounds such as: Buzz, Squish, Bang etc. Sounds basically :)

(Not sure if I'm supposed to start a new topic, but it's regarding this particular story again, so I'm just sticking with this thread)

Would like a tiny bit more help if possible: The first page of momo tarou, the sentence on the far left which ends in うです。There is a character just before the う - is that supposed to be そ? Looks a little strange to me...?

It's an alternate way to write そ. Indeed, you are correct sir. :)
