Answearing by "because"...

Postby Edvent » Tue 01.24.2006 4:59 pm

Hi all!

Well, in a kind of exercise I had to answear following question:

--> nande nihon e kimasu ka - why do you come to Japan?

ok, I know how to answear a "naze" -question (naze...? - nazenara...!)

But how can I answear a "nande" ? Is it maybe "nandenara"?
Just wanted to make sure...

「日本人(にほんじん)の女(おんな)の子(こ)が好(す)きですから。」
"Because I like Japanese girls."

It's a simple why question, so just give your answer. Try not to get hung up on self-invented grammatical problems. (By the way, a quick google search does reveal that なんでなら is an expression, but I've been admonished for relying on google before, so....)

I've actually never heard 何でなら. I could be wrong, but I think it's grammatically incorrect.

Google gave me 300 sites. ;) I think it's wrong

I hear 何で quite a bit, but never 何でなら. Try ALCing it (http://www.alc.co.jp). Words that I hear frequently that all mean 'why': 何で、なぜ、どうして

"何でなら" means, basically, "as to why" or "if you want to know why." It should be followed by a comma, and then a reason.

映画を見に行かない。何でなら、お金はない。

Tony,
Can you use the なら with 何で?
I knew that there was なぜなら, but I hadn't heard of 何でなら.
It's not in my dictionary either.

It's also no on ALC. I'll ask a Japanese person about it tomorrow.

It's rather irregular, but it's the same idea -- or so I gather from usage.

I was wondering if you could use "tame ni" to answer a question like this. So when they ask "nande nihon e kimasu ka" could you reply;
日本語をべんきょうするために日本へきます
I came to japan to study japanese.

はい、この場合、「ため」を使っても、かまわない。
しかし、あなたの英文は過去形で書いてあるから、日本語の文も過去形で書いた方がいいと思う。
