I want it!

I know ~tai makes a verb like "to eat" into "want to eat" but what if you just want something?

Like "I want a cat"

or "Because, I want it!"

also, what would be the past tense of this?:DB)

To say (I) want (something), use "hoshii": ねこがほしい. The past tense, like all adjectives, is formed by changing the final い to かった: ねこがほしかったから (because I wanted a cat)

no, が is a particle. If you just want to say "I want that" you would say
それが欲しい。
or just
欲しい! (this sounds a little childish)
