これは何ですか。

Post by Sachi » Sat 05.13.2006 5:03 pm

OK, so while I was at the mall today, we stopped in at Ae´ropostale. I saw a shirt in there with Japanese on it, and so (of course), I tried to read it and actually understood most of it, but I’m a little confused…

I believe it said「南せな女の子」. I know the first kanji means south, and that 「女の子」means girl, but what’s the せな? Does it turn south into a na-adjective making the phrase “Southern girl”? I tried looking it up, but didn’t exactly get anywhere. I could have remembered wrong, but I’m pretty sure that’s it. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks!

Is it possible that you may have seen 幸せな女の子?
In that case 幸せな is a na-adjective = shiawase-na which means happy, fortunate, lucky.
I think it also has the implication of being contented. A native speaker might tell us more.

That makes sense... I didn't get the chance to look at it very long (or closely), so I could have easily made that mistake. どうもありがとうございます。

I looked it up, but it didn't say or imply anything about being content (though it had the other part). Anyone know if content is kind-of a "hidden meaning"? This is kind-of interesting.

Perhaps the best thing to do would be to compare it to the other common ways to express hapiness, うれしい and よろこび(and so よろこんで etc.). Compared to these, I think siawase suggests more of a steady state of being happy, so would generally imply being content. shiawase is more like the idea of happiness in general, perhaps. We can also say 満足している to say that we are satified/content.
