あれ

Post by Oyaji » Tue 05.23.2006 12:22 pm

Quite often Japanese requires more work on the part of the listener than English, because parts of speech it is assumed the listener understands are often left out.

Today I went to a funeral, and in Japan it is the custom to take an envelope with a small (or not) amount of money in it as an offering to the deceased. This is called 香典 (kouden). My wife has beautiful handwriting, so it is always her job to write our names on the envelope. This morning, after writing our names she handed me the empty envelope and said:
「あれがないので、入れたらあれをつけてね。」(Are ga nai node, iretara are wo tsukete ne.)
No subject, two vague pronouns and no object. :o Of course out of context this is impossible to translate, but even in context I find it almost scary that I knew exactly what she meant. "There is no pre-gumming on the envelope, so after you put the money in use paste to close it."

It struck me as an interesting example of Japanese, so I thought I would share. :)

Is it are because it refers to the paste
that is not there? I mean, even if you had
bottle of glue in your hand, it could still be
are wo tsukete (not sore wo tsukete) if she
would mean that "use glue to close it, not
contact plastic(or something else)". Could
this be right?

Reminds me of a song by Japanese rap/hip hop group Suchadarapa
called あれはあれ which pretty much goes through every nuance of what あれ can imply :-)
The lyrics are probably out there on the web somewhere.

My girlfriend often uses あれ when she's trying to remember exactly what thing she's trying to talk about. Since she hasn't mentioned the item yet, it kind of comes out of no where and if she doesn't continue right quick I get confused.

私:今からどうしよう?
彼女:そっか、あれはどう?
私:。。。
彼女:。。。
私:あれは何??
彼女:昨日話してたやつ、何だっけ・・・

EDIT: I just realized this conversation could sound naughty. :o Oh well, I'll leave it as-is. Just know it wasn't THAT あれ!
