The difference between 〜たりする & 〜て

Postby Sumi » Wed 01.17.2007 10:53 pm

This might seem like a stupid question, but, what is the difference between 〜たりする & 〜て. They both seem to perform similar functions.

Example:

1. 本を読んだり、湖で泳いだり、仕事に行ったりしました
2.本を読んで、湖で泳いで、仕事に行った

So can you use them interexchangely? I'm just confused because I don't see a clear difference between the two.

the tari tari suru form is used when describing two or more activities you did with the implication of excetera. So for example, the sentence, 'kinou, paatii de odottari, tomodachi to hanashitari shimashita" would mean "Yesterday at the party I danced, talked with my friends, etc". The te form doesn't carry this implication.

ps-sorry for the romaji, I didn't feel like using I.M.E.
Two muffins were baking in an oven. One turns to the other and says "sure is hot in here." The other replies "AH TALKING MUFFIN!"

二つのマフィンがオーブンで焼かれていた。片方のマフィンがもう一方のマフィンに向かって、"暑いね”と言った。すると、話しかけられたほうのマフィンは"アッ!喋るマフィンだ!”と驚いた。 :)

i think "~tari ~tari suru" lists representative examples in an inexhaustive list. in english, it's like saying, "do things like, x, y, etc."
also, i think the te-form might also suggest a sequential order.

I did things like reading, swimming in the lake, and going to work.

I read a book, then swam in the lake, then went to work.
