JLPT vocab lists (?)

Post by Nibble » Fri 07.07.2006 6:35 pm

According to the JLPT test specifications, you are supposed to know 6000 words to write the 2級, and 10000 words to write the 1級; however, all of the vocabulary lists I have found on the internet (including the ones here and here) contain only 5000 words for the 2級 and 8000 words for the 1級.

Are these lists missing 1000-2000 words, or do the JLPT specification books from which they were supposedly taken purposely leave that many out for some reason (ie, to allow test writers to choose words more freely)? If they're just bad lists, does anyone know where I can get better ones?

I think the reason for that is because the same 6,000 or 10,000 or what-have-you words are not used every year. There are differences, of course, from year-to-year so they cannot say exactly what words you need to know for the test--but they can give you an excellent start. The words they give you on the list are probably the ones that appear nearly 100% of the time each year.

I imagine you probably know several words outside of those lists, right? Random words you may have learned somewhere. My feeling is if you study that list and know it for the test, you will be able to do very well on the JLPT--words you weren't given to study that appear on the test will probably be very few, and if your Japanese is good (and it should be by lvl 1 and 2) you will probably be able to decypher the word's meaning from the context of the sentence (or the kanji used to write it).
