ゆきの物語 - vocabulary list

Postby richvh » Wed 06.20.2007 9:08 pm

Now that I've sent the final drafts of the first few chapters to Clay, I'm working on vocabulary and kanji lists for them.

Following the lead of Breaking Into Japanese Literature, I'm including any word where I've used a kanji, and excluding common kana-only words (こそあど words, the verbs する、なる、いる、ある unless part of an idiom), but should I include other kana only words like という (as in ゆきという娘), とても、あまり、ため? What do you, as readers or educators, think I should include?

I'm basing the vocabulary list on edict (pruning senses and parts of speech to what is appropriate to the passage), and providing cross-references to the Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary along with a list of kanji taken from kanjidict.

Speaking of Breaking into Japanese Literature, Giles Murray posted a comment on my blog this morning:

His Acid Kanji video is... weird, but interesting.

Well, I know it's an awful lot of work, but my vote would go to a complete wordlist.

I've just started reading the story and I really like it so far! Well done!

Your story does have a few kana only words that aren't exactly in beginner's textbooks. For example, I believe in the second chapter you have たんと魚. I had no idea what たんと could be until I looked it up in dictionary. (means たくさん)

あまりうまくできなくてごめんなさい

Here's an example of several words that may be good in the list.

Of course like katafei said, it is a lot of work! I don't know if you would want to, but you might consider asking for some volunteers.

It depends on your intended audience. If you're targeting the decoders/decipherers, then you should include as comprehensive a vocabulary list as possible. If you're intending it more for people that have some reading proficiency, you can be a little more selective.

For instance, the example clay posted:

あまりうまくできなくてごめんなさい

There's nothing in there that's particularly difficult; the grammar is essentially first-year Japanese, and the words are all common (only うまい might not be found in a beginner textbook). To a decoder, however, that could end up being one of the most difficult sentences in the chapter because they don't know where to break the words. In that case, having all those hiragana-only words on the list can be helpful.

(Of course, the geeky way to do it would be to set up some sort of script so that the user could customize what sort of vocab list she gets -- either by selecting JLPT level 1-4 kanji, or by uploading their own kanji list, and with additional options "display hiragana words" and "display all words" or something like that. But this is probably too fancy. :))

My intended audience is, and has been since the early chapters if not from the very beginning, intermediate learners. I also can't do scripting unless I purchase a premium hosting package, or move it off my personal webspace (Zen has offered hosting in the past.)

Now I'm indexing kanji to the Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary, but not all the kanji I'm using are in that dictionary. What do you suggest as a secondary index? (I have a copy of Nelson's, so that would be most convenient for me to double-check that I've correctly extracted the index from Kanjidict via JWPce.)

Then it might be better to make the decision for what words to put on the list based on the frequency of the word itself, not the orthography it's written with.

I would exclude any word written entirely in JLPT 4 level kanji (this is very easy to do with JWPce's color kanji feature, if you use that program), unless it uses a very unusual reading of the characters.

I guess I ought to find a copy of the JLPT4 vocabulary list, so I can decide what words to exclude.

Here's a first pass of the word and kanji lists for the title and first paragraph of chapter 1 (which is approximately half of the entire chapter.) Kanji crossreferenced with only a number are indexed to the Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary; kanji cross-referenced with N+number are not in the Kanji Learner's Dictionary, and are indexed to Nelson's Japanese-English Character Dictionary.

Judging by a (somewhat old) JLPT4 vocabulary list I found on the web, I've included all of the kana-only words that I should have (save perhaps したい - is that JLPT4 grammar? Should I list it seperately, or change the 結婚する entry to 結婚したい?), and if I follow Chris' suggestion, I should remove 二人、子、見る、今 and 小さな. Comments?

IMO someone that does not know those five words is going to have a lot of problems with the text even with a vocab list.

My opinion: remove them. Quite frankly I don't see why anyone who doesn't know those very basic words would be attempting to read pages of Japanese-only text.

Provisional complete vocabulary and kanji list for chapter 1. Uncertain points: したい - is this JLPT4 grammar? した方がいい - is this JLPT4 grammar? (The comparative use of ほう seems to be, but I don't know if this use is.) お前 - not JLPT4 vocabulary (according to the list I found on the web), but contains only JLPT4 kanji, and probably familiar to most if not all people likely to be able to read this.

Comments?

「ゆきや、お前の幸せを探すために、都に行った方がいいよ」と毎日おばあさんは言いました。

「おばあさまを独りここに残して都へ出かけることはできません」とその度、ゆきは答えました。

ある日、おばあさんは亡くなりました。おばあさんをお墓に葬ってから、ゆきはなけなしの家財を集め、都へ向けて出発しました。

I might not be able to make any contribution on the word list, but I am truly looking forward to reading the entire story along with the Japanese text as I listen to the downloaded MP3 sound file anytime, anywhere, like the one I am reading (listening practice) at the moment.

It does help in recognizing kanji and its usage and pronunciation, at least for me.

Thank you.

I'm not sure what list you're using, but JLPT Study has lists that are noted with:

I have compiled and formatted this vocabulary list using the latest official exam specification book (as of 2006): Japanese Language Proficiency Test: Test Content Specifications (Revised Edition), The Japan Foundation and Association of International Education, Japan (2004).

Said site also has grammar lists and backtests (some 12 or so years worth) that you might use to confirm the level of various constructions.

If the practices of professional publishing houses is of interest to you, those that publish books aimed at children will sometimes include furigana for every kanji with the exception of numbers using standard readings. For example, 三人 shows only にん for furigana, but 二人 gives ふたり. I believe I've also seen く given for 九, though I can't remember if that was in reference to a regular occurance or a one-time deal simply to fit meter. In relation to your vocab lists, I would think that providing definitions for anything more than the counter would be superfluous but that you should take into account irregulars. I think any desire to show voicing of mora should be done with furigana rather than congesting your vocabulary lists.

I agree that with the others that, barring irregulars, the simplest of vocabulary should be assumed. If you provide a comprehensive, one to one list you might as well write in English. That being said, while I am totally and utterly against the use of emoticons/pictograms in all other situations, I would like to see sometime to indicate hyperbole. Like maybe a hyperbola. That would be superb.

On another note, my PC is a little too cumbersome to take with me on the train, but if you buy me a printer, I will read your book.

EDIT: Or I can listen to your story. But you'll need to buy me new headphones. I've broken two sets already dodging oblivious obaasan on bikes and getting the cord caught on something. I'd try knocking them off their bikes -- after all, they're indestructible -- but it's always in front of a koban. Eheu! Pass the tissues...

There is a MP3 file for this story???? Wow, you have been really thorough! I'm going to look for that link (although any shortcut is welcome :)), since my pc won't give a peep.

About the list: I agree that some words will be obvious. But I also think it would be very random to choose which words are and which words aren't?
