ゆきの物語 - vocabulary list

Translations of chapters from the story by our own richvh

There will be MP3 files of at least the early chapters, read by Clay's wife Yumi. Right now, there's just a sample flash file of Yumi reading chapter 1, which I linked in the logo thread.

I'm trying not to be random, which is why I'm excluding JLPT4 grammar/vocabulary from the lists. If you're not at least JLPT4 or equivalent, you're probably going to find the story heavy going. (The latest chapters are probably closer to JLPT3 or 2.)

Sorry, I was talking about Breaking Into Japanese Literature.
Extra feature does help me to pick up the pronunciation easily.
But I do look forward to reading Rich-san's book one day (make sense??)

I'm look forward to the future installments of Yumi's reading of ゆきの物語 too. I hope Clay makes them available as audio files.

Rich sent me the final revisions for the first six chapters. I was too busy to get to it this week, but I plan to make the time next week.

I suppose the final version which Rich has graciously let us post here would be:

1) an HTML file with that chapter
2) a flash MP3 player to play that chapter
3) Vocabulary and kanji list

I suppose there isn't a need for a furigana version if the vocab list will have all the kanji in the chapter.

Any other ideas? I was going to do it in Flash with fun stuff like a 'furigana button', but HTML would be better for those using Rikaichan.

Well, if I follow Chris' advice, the vocabulary list won't, quite, have all the kanji used in the chapter - just those in words containing non-JLPT4 kanji, or those in words that aren't JLPT4 vocabulary. (5 words were affected in Chapter 1 - 二人、子、見る、今 and 小さな - should I add them back in?) (Hm, I probably ought to add 見る back in as 見られる, as the passive doesn't seem to be JLPT4 vocabulary.)

Here is a quick HTML version of Chapter One with an embedded MP3 player and the Vocab from this thread:
http://thejapanesepage.com/y1.htm

I decided to remove the furigana since HTML doesn't handle it well, but any thoughts?

Rich did a LOT of work on the vocab list alone. Someone should give him a massage.

Wow! I like it very much.
The only improvement I could think of is mouse-sensitive pop-up windows with vocabulary. But it's not really necessary and it's just a lot more of work ;)

Hm, that MP3 player doesn't seem to support replay, or rewinding.

That's the old MP3 file, isn't it? There were a couple of changes made that are reflected in the text, but not the audio.

What do you guys think of having the Author's Translation included?

mm I don't like the idea for the fact that I'd check it every time I have difficulties translating a chapter :p

I find it helpful to be able to set to repeat-1 and repeat-all when all the chapters are there. A drag bar to rewind and listen to a short passage again is also helpful.

Thanks for the effort to put this project together.

This particular player has a version for multiple MP3 files:
http://musicplayer.sourceforge.net/
That would be good as we get the chapters up.

If you know of a better player, please let me know.

Yes, that is the old MP3 file. If the reading didn't change, is that file ok?

Some ideas (gathering from what has been mentioned)

1) Multichapter player
2) Author's translation (as a pop up link or at the bottom)
3) Downloadable/Printable PDF of the chapter with furigana
4) Mouse onclick word definitions

I don't mind doing extra to make it nice, but I'd like to get a polished chapter one from the start instead of half doing ten chapters only to redo them later.

UPDATE: Added a PDF download with furigana

If the text hadn't changed, that file would be super. Furin told me that Yumi sounds like a professional.

Edit: Hopefully some of our resident web designers will chime in with ideas.

Yes, I am especially interested to hear of other MP3 players people may recommend. Or other ideas for additions to each chapter page.

Furin told me that Yumi sounds like a professional.

Thanks! I will tell Yumi that. :p It would be nice to add some atmospheric background sounds, but I guess that would take a long time and may end up taking away from any educational value.

Great! I will try to get Yumi to record the next four chapters next week. The problem is finding a quiet time for recording :)
