AFAIK only characters.
And there's a difference between simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. The latter being more complicated and still used in Taiwan (and maybe other places as well, i',m thinking maybe Hong Kong?)
The Taiwanese are always keen on being different from the Chinese mainland, so no simplified characters for them.

Man, how can anyone learn to read, let alone write, that many characters????
One of the reasons I chose Japanese over Chinese, actually ;)

What do you mean by "letters"? Do you mean latin letters like these: "ABC"?

If that's the case, Japanese does ocasionally use latin letters. I don't know about Chinese.

Do you mean hanyupinyin (漢語拼音)?

In pinyin, we have 声母
b, p, m , f
d, t, l, n
g, k, h
j, q, x
zh, ch, sh, r
z, c, s,
y, w

and 韵母
a, o, e, i, u, ü
ai, ei, ao, ou,
an, en, ang, eng, er
ia, ie, iao, iou, ian, in, iang, ing, iong
ua, uo, uai, uei, uan, uen, uang, ueng, üe, üan, üen

Example, ba > 八(ba1),拔(ba2),把(ba3),霸(ba4)

so on ......

Actually I think Japanese is more difficult than Chinese cuz it has grammar changes more like western languages, it has hiragana, katakana AND kanji all mixed together and Japanese uses traditional AND simplified kanji characters. とてもむずかしい! My head hurts, I need to take a rest... ;)

* btw: why is the upper-half of Tanuki's head white? haha just wondering!

Ahlen wa sahlen ya Rock Lee.

In Chinese you may see letters sometime -- but rarely -- as shorthand, Usually it's hanzi ("Chinese characters").

There are some differences in character styles among China and Taiwan and Japan, but yes, kana make the thing obvious. :)
