"Hottest Threads"
To me, a hot thread seems to be a thread that's very active, not a thread with a high post count.
I think that the top five "hottest threads" should be the threads with most number of posts in the least amount of time. In other words, it should be the post count / the amount of time the thread has been posted. This would show which posts are more active at the current time.
The Study Group thread, for instance, has been a hot thread ever since I've been coming to this site in April. However, it's gained 20 posts in that time, whereas many other threads get that many posts in a week.
If this goes unchanged, soon the top five hottest threads will really be the top five dead one-hit-wonder threads.
If it is at all a possible task, the hottest threads list should be changed to show the threads with the highest post count in comparison with the life of the thread.

RE: "Hottest Threads"
I always thought it would be kind of rude to post something like that (lol) but now that some one has I really have been dying to say that. And is there a chance there could be more than 5 newest threads at a time?
Goals:
1) Have decent proficiency in Japanese, enough to get around/talk/read/write.
2) Visit Japan for a week or so one summer.

Hmm... I don't think it's rude at all. It's a nice suggestion. Most of the time, I read/post based on what I see on the front page (on the Newest Threads list) and I totally agree with you Gakusha. Post count / time or something more tweaked (for instance post count / time + post count * 0.1) should be a better way of showing where you're most likely to find something interesting / active.
RE: "Hottest Threads"
Yes, I agree, that would be a good idea.

You thought that was rude??? Hmmm.
Anyway, thank you for your support. I hope this is possible to change.

I agree with you gakusha-san. We've had the same "hottest" threads for what seems an eternity.
RE: "Hottest Threads"
So is there anyone else that thinks this is a good idea? It's been a week with no more replies, and since this maybe isn't possible, I'd like to know.

I agree in principle, the hot threads list probably isn't compiled in the best way - but in most cases I would imagine that the most active threads would also appear in the latest threads, so you'd just have duplicate links to the same thread.
RE: "Hottest Threads"
i think the hottest thread idea of being most active is a great idea
