Working Visa's in Japan
Dear all,
I am pondering a move to Japan to improve my Japanese, and spend a chunk of time getting exposure to the people and country.
Negatives: I am 41, dont really want to work full time
Positives: I have a degree (Engineering)
Know a family in Japan
Have been learning Japanese 4 years (still rather poor!)
Asides: I enjoy Japanese film and have Japanese conversation weekly
Ideally I would like to teach conversational English privately.
I think I would have to get a full Work Visa because of my age. But really would rather not have to get a 9-5 job.
Am I fooling myself, of would such a move be feasible? (Be gentle...)
Most obliged,
Jonathan.

RE: Working Visa's in Japan
I like the sentiment of "I'm 41 and I don't want to work". Do you think you're the only one?
I think the run-of-the-mill English schools don't keep you too busy. The pay isn't amazing, but if you just want to work in Japan I think it'd work fine for you. Check out Aeon, they claim a 36-hour work week.
Unlike 95% of the other people on this site who say "I want to work in Japan, HELP ME!" you actually have a degree which is the first (and pretty much only) requirement for this type of job.

I'm 42 and loathe working. Any ideas for me?

I hear suicide has some good retirement benefits these days.
You're probably not as smart as you think.

Suicide is painless. It brings on many changes. And I can take or leave it as I please.
(Bonus points to anyone who gets the allusion).

Google teaches a great many things, and today it has taught me that the M*A*S*H theme song has words. Something new every day...
