Need a smelter or crucible, lol. Advice wanted

Postby Jei-kyon » Mon 09.17.2007 2:46 am

So, I got this platinum ore see, and don't know how to get it purified so I can sell it.

Anyone know of a good smelter that provides service to the public? Or maybe a little crucible I could buy? It's not like getting an Easy-Bake-Oven, I know, but it's worth a shot, right?

You think you'd recover enough to even pay for an Easy-Bake?

I guess I could have someone look at first for free and go from there. I have no idea. But it does weigh a heck of a lot more than it would normally for its size. So that has got me curious.

And having my own melt-down-anything device would be cool too. Just think of all the things you could melt!

Generally you need several tonnes of ore to recover your costs.

I went hunting around and saw that one particular place which mines platinum is working ore that is about 5 parts per million platinum. Fortunately it is rich in nickel, which offsets the cost of getting at the platinum.

How much "ore" you got?

You could always try building your own if you really want one that badly.
BAM!

Though that one says it'll melt aluminium, I'm sure you could improvise and build one that could melt platinum, maybe.

That flower pot thing is kind of cool. Heh.

I would like to research more into it, but whenever I do, it always seems I need a phd just to read up on subjects like smelting. Too much nomenclature! But maybe that' only because I am lazy...

And I only have about 5 pounds of the stuff, so if I would need tonnes to make it worth my while.... Maybe I will just sell the ore to someone random person for twenty bucks.

You know what you can do? You smell and melt something while you're in a cubical!
Aint it simple?! :D

Maybe I can sell smelt while smelting in a smelly sweatshop in Surinam too.... In a crude cubicle using a crumbling crucible no less, producing coniferous cones of smelted silver and some slippery when wet and molten gold..... o_0

See?! There's the attitude I want, Jei-kyon! ;) :D
How about you go to a jewelry shop place or something and ask somebody else to smelt your metal. Unless this is something you COMPLETELY want to do independently, just ignore me then. OH! Or maybe you should try something like those glass blowers would do...
Honestly, just ignore me in any possible way. :p

Heh, you could try forging the thing into something. Again, this assumes you could get a flame hot enough to soften the platinum enough to shape it. Then again, five pounds isn't that much to work with anyway...

A part missing here is getting the platinum out before you can even begin to contemplate melting/forging it.

Platinum is found is such small quantity, it is actually filtered out with a sort of "molecular glue" that separates it from the rock (which must be ground up first).

I'm afraid you are the proud owner of a practically worthless hunk of rock. Now, if you're sitting on a five pound lump of platinum that has some impurities..... I'll pay you $50 for it. >.>

:D

EDIT: Here's some food for thought: "Approximately 10 tons of ore must be mined - sometimes almost a mile underground at temperatures greater than 120 degrees Fahrenheit - to produce one pure ounce of the "so-called white gold." Furthermore, the total extraction process takes six long months." --- SOURCE

Assuming ore of equal quality to that mentioned by SaraLynne, at current prices your five pound hunk of rock contains approximately 32 and 1/2 cents worth of platinum.

Well this may be of interest then, as I double checked what it was, and it is the leftovers from a plant that made catalytic converters, and supposedly has 3-5 grams of actual platinum and other random PGMs.....

Here it is:

Rest assured that if it were economical to recover the platinum the plant most likely would have done so.
