Basic Word Order.

Postby Christian_ » Sun 09.18.2005 11:54 am

I have a few questions about word order and I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I can read about it a little more in depthly. Ive realized Ive started to make all the japanese sentences I make are in English word order like my signature I wrote that in English word order it should be ( i think) 私日本語が好き。 not the way i have it which is 私が好き日本語。 So Does anyone know where I can read more about word order and where to put adjectives and verbs if i were to put one or something ? ありがとう:(
Goals:
1) Have decent proficiency in Japanese, enough to get around/talk/read/write.
2) Visit Japan for a week or so one summer.

i had one of those "eureka!" moments when i read tae kim's guidetojapanese.org. you see, the only word order that matters in japanese is that the main verb of the sentence should come at the end of the sentence (and this includes the state-of-being verb when it's implied). in fact, a perfectly grammatically correct sentence in japanese can be nothing more than a single verb. in short, there is no SOV word order in japanese. here's an OSV gem from RC Succession's 「君が僕を知ってる」:

コーヒーを僕に入れておくれよ
(pour me a cup of coffee)

コーヒー(を) being the object, 僕(に) being the subject, and 入れる being the main verb of the sentence.

I suggest that you get a book of Japanese sentence patterns. There's one I used by Naoko Chino and I see there's now another out by Taeko Kamiya.
