Fads
Hello! As all teenagers and kids go through, are fads. I was wondering if you had any fads of the past in Japan that may have just been silly or current fads right now. Thanks for reading!

RE: Fads
There's this fad where people place themselves on high buildings and wear obnoxiously bright clothing and shine very strong beams of light at people until their skin blisters... It's quite annoying.
Sometimes I think that I'm afraid of thinking, and that scares me.

Hip-hop fashion.
Can't wait for the twenty-years-later retrospective on television where they show the idiotic sh*t young people are wearing these days and all have a good belly laugh for ever having thought it appealing.

Never underestimate my capacity for pettiness.

RE: Fads
yeah considering NWA is 20 years ago, that would be about right. current hip hop is more about being a gangsta than anything else, and no gangsta wears his pants backwards or inside out when he can wear them low and let everyone see his chinos.

I hate hip-hop. I mean, it's not cool at all. All of the "gangstas" at my high school are all idiots wanting detentions.
Same thing with the gothic trends. Not very pretty to see.

it's all subjective hatori. even an Urban Cowboy can be "uncool" if he acts like an ass. in fact trends of dress and society don't necessarily mean the person following those trends is actually socially obligated to act a certain way. judging someone based soley on that is just a idiotic as wearing the gear jsut to fit in.

I nearly ended up Goth 20 years ago (omg! Im in the UK though) so I think Goth has had enough longevity to earn itself a place in counter-culture. Thank god for punk or Id be wearing frilly lace and purlple velvet to this day hehehe.

the Gothic/HotTopic trend is spreading like wildfire here too. i know people who wouldn't want to be caught dead in these cloths who are now becoming the very thing they hate!
Personally, I don't need a fad, i think being gay is a fad in it's own. who here agrees with me?
oh and on the topic of JP fads, check this site out;

RE: Fads
the fad that annoys me the most are those damn monkey suits. I don't know who decided it would be a good idea to choke yourself slowly and wear heat absorbing clothing while going to places where you're likely to encounter stress, but I want to hunt him down and pile 50 layers of those suits on him and make him work at the most stressful job I can find. Why the hell did that catch on?

I don't. By definition, a fad is short-lived. I was born gay, I grew up gay and I'll most likely die gay. Have you heard of anyone being born emo?

You don't see many of these "fads" around here. You see some goths, a few punks, a few more skaters... Probably the biggest group are the "preppy" people.

RE: Fads
There is an endless parade of TV comedians that pop up out of nowhere with some dumb catchphrase or funny/dumb/weird skits that become hits with the public and then fade away the next year. For instance, Dandy "GETS!" Sakano, Tetsu and Tomo's "Nande Darou" song, Hard Gay, etc. etc. etc.
