Comparing 4chan to 2chan is like comparing Saving Private Ryan to Shaving Ryan's Privates.

It's not the same thing. not even close.

Er. The boards block posting by anyone other than Japanese. I thought that was obvious.

Not obvious at all - how would they 'detect' if you're Japanese anyway? Anyone can post there.

I think there's some confusion here between 2ちゃんねる (2ch.net) which as far as I can tell is open to everyone, and 双葉ちゃん / ふたばちゃんねる (2chan.net) which according to wikipedia blocks posting from non-Japanese IP addresses. I haven't tried to post on either though.

I think 2chan.net span off from 2ch.net, and 4chan was an attempt to mimmick 2chan.net... but I'm not really sure. They're all big on anonymous posting though, I guess.

Let me rephrase the question. I would like to post on 2ch. Currently, I get error messages. I assumed this was because like futaba channel 2ch blocked us dirty gaijin by broad IP blocks.

futaba is pretty great, but I am -mostly- uninterested in posting/discussing porn with people. I would like to talk about a broad range of topics with Japanese. I just discovered this:

I can freely post on 2ch when I use the English translation of the menu. When I go to 2ch normally, the side menu is scrambled and weird and I cannot post. I do have Asian fonts installed, so it can't be that.

Even with futaba I don't think it's as simple as blocking 'dirty gaijin' out. Maybe that's a part of it, but I always thought bandwidth factored in pretty heavily as well.

Anyway, the side menu is scrambled for me too, it's to do with encoding. If you go to the 'view' menu and 'character encoding' or whatever (I'm using Firefox, other broswers might differ), run through the Japanese options and see if any match it up. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Messing with those settings might give you a bad case of mojibake when writing email or posting messages though, though, so take heed.

Damn. It worked. Thank you. I appreciate it. I thought encoding was too simple an issue, so I never tried it.

To be honest, so did I until a couple months ago - until then I had assumed you would need the Japanese version of Windows for the characters to be displayed correctly. But I just played around with it one day and it did the trick. I've came across one or two sites though, where I just can't get it to match.

doinkies has gotten error messages on 2ch before when trying to post, even when using the English Navigator. I assume they blocked my ISP (Comcast), because I could post there with no problems once. I can still read 2ch, though. And I've never had a problem reading 2ch's side menu.

The thing about Futaba is that since it's an image board, bandwidth is an issue, and so Futaba blocks gaijin to save bandwidth, not out of racism. There are several other sites (mostly streaming video sites like Gyao) that block gaijin and this is, again, for bandwidth-saving reasons.

Also, another thing about 2ch. You should not introduce yourself or put a name and email address. That goes against 2ch etiquette (as oxymoronic as that term may seem :p). Also, 2ch uses a lot of distinct jargon and netspeak that you may not be familiar with, so it's somewhat of a hard read even for more advanced learners. And since 2ch is a completely anonymous board, it has a lot of doinks who feel free to spew their rubbish (sort of like 4chan in a way).
