Dating video games.

Hello! Anyways, I know in Japan that there are dating video games and you just try to get a guy or girl and just... date stuff and make them fall in love with you. I just wanted to hear your comments about them. I've always wanted to try one, so if there's one that'll be able to work OKAY on a dial-up computer online, regardless of what language it's in, give a link. LOL

IMO they're boring. A lot of text reading, and then you just pick menu choices and such. Probably your best bet is Sakura Taisen; this actually combined dating sim elements with a strategy RPG.

Shouldn't really link, though, since that's illegal activities.

Also a thing to note is that while Westerners think that all dating sims = porno, that's not the case. There are a huge number of dating sims that are completely clean (and in most cases just cute), and there are sims marketed for girls as wells as guys.

I've actually never played any, so I can't recommend any, but Sakura Taisen is really popular, although I was never aware that it was a dating sim (thanks Chris!). Kanon is the most popular male oriented dating sim, and I'm pretty sure it's non-sexual.

Well, the original version of Kanon does have sex scenes in it but there is also an all-ages version.

I don't play a lot of dating sims or visual novels but I have a soft spot for ときめきメモリアル (Tokimeki Memorial). It's more interactive and not like a visual novel-type game at all, though there are many parts where you have to choose your response to the girl whom you date. None of the games in the series have sex in them, and there are 2 of them that are aimed at girls as well.

hmmm i just found this new online game named" Fly ff"(ff means for fun).
People who are playing the game say your avatar can date and even get married in the game but i have to see this for myself....

There is an 18+ version and an all ages version.

As far as dating sims go, I actually find them pretty good for learning Japanese.

I'm playing the Galaxy Angel series which in all essence is a dating sim but it also includes battle mode where you strategize controlling a fleet of ships in outer space.

Also I play alot of ero dating games >_> but I'm 18 so it's fine. *cough* Rabu Desu 2 *cough*

Anyone know if there's any of them for DS? or at least some Visual Novel games?

I know the original Tokimeki Memorial has been ported to the DS. Also there is a port of one of the Tokimeki Memorial Girls' Side games for the DS (where you date guys instead of girls).
They aren't visual novels though. Most visual novels that get ported to consoles get ported to "full" consoles, often the PS2. (And if the visual novel originally contained porn scenes, these scenes are often taken out for the console version.)

I don't think yesjapan.com sells that kind of stuff (I just looked), I think you might be thinking of Jbox or their sister site that I will not mention on a family-friendly forum.

Maybe Wakannai was thinking of YesAsia? I know they sell all sorts of video games there.

I hadn't heard of YesAsia until now. Looking at that site, it matches what wakkaniさん was talking about more closely than Jbox. Although Jbox does have them for PCs and in English. (Jbox will only have G or PG rated items, their sister site will go to R and higher ratings)
