How do Japanese view foreigners?

Post by Shoj_Blade » Fri 12.07.2007 9:07 am

I heard from some that they are actually really nice to foreigners, but I've heard from others that they really dislike them.

Sorry if this question was already asked elsewhere... I can't find the search option here. ._.;;

I don't really care much.

Though some countries don't like foreigners at all, and some do, and I was wondering what Japan was.

So it basically depends on who's there; some like, some don't, and some don't care?

If you can't find the Search option, you aren't looking very hard.

I can understand his question a bit. Here in America, you can see African,Latino,Canadian,French,Itallian,German,Irish,Chinese,Japanese,Indian,British,Dutch ,Cuban,Guatemalen etc... people all in the same day.
In japan, Tokyo especially, they have a similar diversity, but on a smaller scale. The only thing the OP has to realize, is that the japanese people are no different than any other people. We all have our own opinion.

I have a hard time trying to relate to someone or help someone out when they seem to be under the impression that every citizen of japan was cloned from one person, guaranteeing that they all feel the same way and all share the exact same views towards things. I remember someone on this forum asking if someone thought Japan was a monolithic entity, which is the kind of thing this question assumes.
I want a clever signature, but I spent all my time trying to come up with a clever post!

Generally, when I read "some countries" I translate that to "some governments" as the government of a country NEVER represents the ideals of every individual in it.

Yeah I guess that's what I meant... North Korea is an example of what I meant, IIRC they don't allow foreigners at all/have deep disrespect towards them. At least from what I remembered from Social Studies last year.

Well then your question would be "How does Japan view foreigners?" and not "How do Japanese view foreigners?"

I personally found the immigration people at Narita a dang sight more friendly than the immigration (INS?) people at LAX. ;)
Don't complain to me that people kick you when you're down. It's your own fault for lying there

This question should really be considered by asking "what do japanese think of themselves". Not every culture so easily defines a foreigner as simply somebody from another country.

What do Japanese think about themselves? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihonjinron

Once you have some understanding of how people view themselves, you can better appreciate the way they view other people.
Hey, so like I\'m not good at formal stuff. Gimme a break, okay
