Japanese Keyboard and unknown Hiragana

Postby neo2407 » Wed 12.12.2007 7:48 pm

Hi everyone. お久しぶりです。 Although some (if not most) of you will probably have forgotten me.

I have two problems that I need help with.

Number 1: I just bought a Japanese USB keyboard and I'm having problems with it.
It's an Elecom TK-UP84CPWH keyboard (this one, http://www2.elecom.co.jp/peripheral/full-keyboard/tk-up84cp except completely white). I plugged it in to one of my laptop's USB ports and it installed by itself. It kind of works, it will type in English no problem but it won't type in Japanese (unless I use the IME but that's not why I bought it).

I've looked at this page http://www.kurnspatrick.com/Support/keyboardmapping.htm and followed everything it said but it hasn't worked I also went to Elecom's website and found what I assume are drivers for it, but when I tried to install them it just restarted my laptop and didn't seem to do anything else.

I e-mailed the company I bought it from asking how to use it but I've not had an e-mail back from them.
And one other thing I've just noticed, all they keys do what they are supposed to. What I mean is the colon : and semi-colon ; keys are separate and each one works the way it's supposed to.
Can someone help me please?

Problem 2: I also bought a new calender for 2008, it's a Neon Genesis Evangelion calender with the Eva characters in chibi form. I noticed the other day that in the corner of the front cover it had written in a small red box ぷちえ then a う with a tenten and a small あ.
I've never seen あ、え、い、お or う with a tenten before never mind with a small あ.
So how is this character pronounced and how would I type it using the IME?

Thanks for any info anyone has on my two problems.

It's プチエヴァ, but written in hiragana to be cute. The ヴァ is pronounced "va" (although many Japanese will just say "ba"). To bring it up in the IME, type "putieva" and then just use the conversion to switch it to hiragana.

Microsoft IME, at least, refuses to render ヴ in hiragana, but there is a Unicode codepoint for it, U+3094: ゔ
I had to use an online Unicode character map to get at that.
[Edit: Oh no, my mistake, it will convert it to hiragana - but I had to only convert the ヴ symbol, trying it with ヴァ doesn't work at all.]

(As an aside, you can attach dakuten to any character by following the character by U+3099: あ゙
I've seen that character (あ゙) used in manga quite a bit, is it some kind of choking あ sound? Or is it just supposed to be read and never pronounced? :))

I'm pretty sure that english windows needs the IME to input Japanese, regardless of what keyboard you use. AFAIK, a japanese keyboard doesn't do anything special.

The IME has a kana input option if you want to be able to enter kana directly. I suppose that having the Japanese keyboard will have that keyset printed on the keys. You could also have purchased clear stickers to put on a standard keyboard to do the same thing though.

I have tried the kana input but it didn't work, it just typed in half-width Katakana.
It supposed to let me type in Japanese without having to spell out each syllable, so I just press one key and that's it. Well at least that's what it was advertised to do.

If you click the "kana" button on the IME, you can use the kana-layout of your keyboard. If only half-width kana shows up when you type, press alt+~ (tilde) and it will switch to full-width hiragana.

Even Japanese windows with a Japanese keyboard uses the same IME system. You don't need any special software for your keyboard.

I'm pretty sure that the hiragana printed on the keys on my keyboard are different from the one's that are displayed when using the IME kana input. I'm not sure if it is, and I can't check it 'cause I'm at college at the moment.

So am I going to have to learn the layout of the kana input or can I chage it so it suits my keyboard?

Your IME should be making QWERTY into たていすかん when you turn on Kana mode. See wikipedia for the layout. Mine looks slightly different due to my use of stickers on a laptop keyboard. (laptops tend to have slightly different layouts in the symbol only keys, such as ` and \ )

I'll try it when I get home.

By the way, is there a shortcut (key press) that would let me switch from English to Japanese with Kana input? Or even a series of key presses?

EDIT: Ok the keyboard layout is exactly the same as the kana input in the IME but how do I switch from Hiragana to full-width Katakana?
The alt+~ didn't work but alt+` (next to 1) did, but it only switched to half-width Katakana.

EDIT 2:Never mind it's alt + a button on my Japanese keyboard next to the space bar.
